Bartlett, Norman Island Victory Australia Angus & Robertson 1955 1st Hardcover Good Fair 20.5cm 166pp & less than 500g to post. Name removed top right corner 1st p. Bartlett was somewhat snobbish about authors who wrote luridly illustrated paperbacks, a case of judging a book by its cover. Anyway here is his novelisation of war in the Pacific, Island Victory > "The events in this book all happened. It is only fiction in so far as events have been rearranged into a coherent pattern." The action is set in 1944 in New Guinea and on Kamiri island - a Dutch possession to the north. An Australian Kittyhawk squadron recaptures Kamiri with US support. The action is mostly in the personalities and thoughts of the characters. There's some interesting absence of regard for the indigenous peoples swept up into this conflict.

Galantin, I.J. Take Her Deep: A Submarine Against Japan in World War II UK Unwin Hyman 1988 Hardcover Good Good 23cm In this ex-Nottinghamshire lib book Galantin recounts the horror that his crew & he went through. On 12 August 1943, Lieutenant-Commander I. J. Galantin took command of the fleet submarine USS Halibut on Midway Island. For the next fourteen months, Galantin and his officers and crew would play their part in the Silent Service's unrelenting attack on Japan's navy and merchant marine. But it was in Luzon Strait in November 1944 that the submarine and its crew underwent their greatest ordeal, recounted here by Galantin. Detected and driven down while attacking a decoy, Halibut was subjected to an assault of appalling ferocity. Badly damaged by more than 250 depth charges, her position known to her attackers, and with key equipment out of commission, the crippled submarine and crew endured hours of desperate manoeuvring and helpless waiting before the enemy finally gave up and the grievously mauled Halibut managed to surface and reach safety. 262 pp in good order, usual lib marks & awful plastic dj protector.

Garfield, Simon Mini: The True and Secret History of the Making of a Motor Car UK Faber & Faber, London 2010 Softcover Good None issued 19.5cm By meeting the people behind the MINI, Simon Garfield uncovers a fascinating story of British endeavour, ingenuity and masterful marketing. The modern MINI has come a long way from the leaky floor and sliding windows. Here's the blurb - In May 1959, the first Mini was produced on an assembly line at Cowley, near Oxford. It would take a team of supremely talented designers, draftsmen, engineers and production-line workers to build a car that was unique in appearance and construction. They would clash frequently over an uncomfortable and unsafe prototype, and the public had to be convinced to buy a car that let in two inches of water when it rained. But somehow the Mini became an icon. Throughout its history, the people behind it have always known that they have been making something rare; a car with soul. The book is in great shape inside, the cover has a crease (probably caused by a VW owner) - inside lots of colour & bw pics. 285pp & less than 500g to post to you. DON'T lend it!

Macarthur, Brian SURVIVING THE SWORD Prisoners of the Japanes 1942-45 Abacus 2006 Hardcover Very Good Very Good In this important book, Brian MacArthur draws on the diaries of American, British, Dutch, and Australian Fepows (Far Eastern prisoners of war), some of whose recollections are published here for the first time. These soldiers wrote and kept their diaries, in secret, because they were determined that to record for posterity how they were starved and beaten, marched almost to death, or transported on “hellships”; how their fellows were summarily executed by guards or felled by the thousands by tropical diseases; and how they were used as slave labor–most notoriously on the Burma-Thailand railway, as depicted in The Bridge on the River Kwai. 494 pp, 2 photo sections, 450g for post.

Stewart, John To the River Kwai Two Journeys 1943, 1979 UK Bloomsbury 1988 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 24 Cm This book exemplifies the debt we owe to our dads & grandads. In this memoir, John Stewart explores the truth and myth of "The Bridge on the River Kwai".;Taken prisoner in Singapore in 1942, John Stewart learned Japanese and became an interpreter. He was one of the few survivors (just over one in ten) of the Sonkurai camp on the Burma-Siam railway. While a Japanese prisoner he kept a diary. His notes serve as a background to this account and as a source of meditation on his Japanese captors. What to think of a Japanese Colonel who cried when a British officer accused him of bad faith? Or a Camp Commandant who, on the point of beheading a couple of prisoners (the author being one of them), changed his mind and invited them to share his sake?;Over 40 years later, the author returned to the Kwai, going beyond Sonkurai and into Burma with the guerrillas, ostensibly to see if the report of a steel bridge still standing in the jungle was true but also to reflect on his past experiences. 175 crisp pp, photo section amidships. about 650 g carded/bubbled for post
