For Sylvia An Honest Account, Ackland, Valentine
4 Ackland, Valentine For Sylvia An Honest Account
W W Norton & Co Inc 1986 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 21.5cm
135pp, lesss than 500g to post. Sylvia Townsend Warner (1893-1978) was a British novelist and short-story writer. Born at Harrow School, Middlesex, where her father was a schoolmaster; Sylvia Townsend Warner was educated by her father. During the 1920s, she began to write creatively, and, within a few years, she produced several volumes of poetry and short stories (for which she was best known in her lifetime), and three novels. At the beginning of her literary career Warner met the poet Valentine Ackland (1906-1969). They became lovers and, despite a number of disruptions resulting from Ackland's alcoholism and occasional infidelity, remained together until Ackland's death. Their relationship is chronicled in Ackland's posthumously published For Sylvia: An Honest Account. During the mid-1930, both became members of the British Communist Party and actively supported the Loyalist cause in the Spanish Civil War. This interest shows in Warner's two novels of the period, Summer Will Show (1936) and After the Death of Don Juan (1938). The former, a historical novel set in the 1840s during the Paris Commune, is her most "lesbian" novel. 'For Sylvia' has a reviewer saying it's well-composed & very eloquent.

Gotham (Penguin) 2011 Paperback As New None issued 20cm

Very good copy of Austen's classic "Mansfield Park". No names, clean pages & less than 500g to post. A quote >> In all the important preparations of the mind she was complete ; being prepared for matrimony by a hatred of home, restraint, and tranquillity; by the misery of disappointed affection, and contempt of the man she was to marry. >> Her own thoughts and reflections were habitually her best companions ; and in observing the appearance of the country, the bearings of the roads, the difference of soil, the state of the harvest, the cottages, the cattle, the children, she found entertainment that could only have been heightened by having Edmund to speak to of what she felt.

One Man's Jungle: A Biography of F.Spencer Chapman, D.S.O., Barker, Ralph
13 Barker, Ralph One Man's Jungle: A Biography of F.Spencer Chapman, D.S.O.
Chatto & Windus 1975 Hardcover Very Good Good/Fair 23 Cm
374pp, over 500g. Faults? repaired tear on dj, previous owner name. Reviewer says >>> Interesting biography of a largely forgotten explorer, war hero and educationalist, with occasional insights into the snobby British class system. Frederick Spencer Chapman, DSO & Bar, ED (10 May 1907 - 8 August 1971) was a British Army officer and World War II veteran, most famous for his exploits behind enemy lines in Japanese occupied Malaya. His medals include the following: the Polar Medal, Gill Memorial Medal, Mungo Park Medal, and the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal. << His books include Northern Lights, 1932. Watkins' Last Expedition, 1934. Lhasa: The Holy City, 1938. Helvellyn to Himalaya, 1940. Memoirs of a Mountaineer, 1945 (combined reprint of the above two). The Jungle is Neutral, 1948 Living Dangerously, 1953. Lightest Africa, 1955. Chapman's extraordinary life is a tale that should be more well-known, perhaps as much as TE Lawrence's is known. [as an aside it's amazing that a biopic wasn't made using Kenneth More in the lead]
