Max Perkins, Portrait of an Editor of Genius & of the Literary Giants he Assembled, Berg, A. Scott
2 Berg, A. Scott Max Perkins, Portrait of an Editor of Genius & of the Literary Giants he Assembled
Macdonald Futura Publishers 1981 Paperback Excellent None issued 17.5cm
640 well bound pages. Biography of Max Perkins, a genius without parallel. A finder of authors, a spotter of talent, who discovered the great American literary giants of the 1930s and 1940s. Perkins was noted for his courtesy and thoughtfulness. He also recognized skilled writing wherever he found it and nursed along writers as few editors did. Apart from his roles as coach, friend, and promoter, Perkins was unusual among editors for the close and detailed attention he gave to books, and for what the novelist Vance Bourjaily called his "infallible sense of structure." Although he never pretended to be an artist himself, Perkins could often see where an author ought to go more clearly than the writer did. An excellent work of biography.

LETTERS OF ALICE B. TOKLAS, STAYING ON ALONE, Burns Edward (ed)
3 Burns Edward (ed) LETTERS OF ALICE B. TOKLAS, STAYING ON ALONE
USA Liveright 1973 1st Hardcover Very Good Very Good 23.5cm
This book from a US county library but may have been a reference work rather than a lending copy, reference card at rear, id on spine, plastic wrap, VGood condition. Clean pages. Clean, unclipped jacket. 426 well bound pages with bw photos throughout. Edited by Edward Burns, intro by Gilbert Harrison. review - Gertrude Stein died in 1946, 20 years before Alice B. Toklas met her own end - - the personal letters in this nicely illustrated volume (over 400 pages) are chiefly the ones that Alice wrote to numerous people of note subsequent to Stein's death. The earlier-period Toklas letters are not included here. Toklas was a remarkable lady and one would be hard-pressed to unearth a friend who was more devoted to her companion. Anyone who said something negative about Stein was immediately relegated to Toklas' lengthy S***-list. Much of the correspondence here (maybe 40%) was sent to her mentor of sorts, Carl Van Vechten and his lovely wife Fania. Other letters went to people like Sir Francis Rose, Brion Gysin, and so on, often yielding unique insights on Stein's and Toklas' numerous acquaintances and friends such as Picasso, Juan Gris, Virgil Thomson, and many other people of historical significance. Documentation of the escalating feud between Toklas and the Stein family subsequent to Gertrude's death also provides great trivial fodder for the reader's consumption. For fans of the two ladies, however, this book is a treasure trove of "hot gossip" and insight on Toklas' compelling personality.

4 Dowrick, Stephanie In the Company of Rilke: Why a 20th-Century Visionary Poet Speaks So Eloquently to 21st-Century Readers
Allen & Unwin 2006 Paperback Excellent None issued 23.5cm Inscription and Signature of Author
In the Company of Rilke is a rare book about a rare poet. Rainer Maria Rilke was a giant of twentieth-century writing who remains a visionary voice for our own time, captivating readers not only with his brilliance but also his fearlessness about the "deepest things." Speaking through his own contradictions and ambivalences, he gives readers a profound understanding of the complex beauty of human existence. review >>> I have not had much experience of poetry, but am finding Stephanie's commentary and elucidations have great clarity. I guess you would have to describe this book as deeply spiritual but you may be amazed at how much you appreciate and agree with.

11 Kaplan, Fred Gore Vidal A Biography
Doubleday 1999 Hardcover Very Good Poor 24cm
1.3 kgs & 850 pp in total. faults? Bump to top edge, dj worn at fold front flap (we do have a better copy) Novelist, cultural critic, essayist, historian, comic satirist, image maker, provocateur, actor, homosexual, bisexual...controversial, brilliant, confrontational, unflinching, cynical, idealistic...finding words to describe Gore Vidal is never difficult. And yet, an accurate picture of this multifaceted chameleon has eluded us until now. Here, at last, is a vastly entertaining biography of an American icon. Kaplan enjoyed complete access to Vidal's papers, letters, and private photographs, as well as television and newsreel footage, but was guaranteed a free hand by Vidal to write as he saw fit. The result is a lively, witty, and textured life of a literary colossus. review >>> One of the reasons this biography is such a joy is it gives the reader ample demonstration of Vidal's scintillating wit and always illuminating social observation/criticism.

I Came, I Saw An Autobiography, Lewis, Norman
13 Lewis, Norman I Came, I Saw An Autobiography
UK Picador 1994 Hardcover Excellent Excellent 19cm
In this magnificent autobiography, Norman Lewis recaptures the years which saw him changed from a stammering schoolboy into a writer for whom, after the war, travel became an indispensable stimulant. Just under 500g for post, 391 crisp pp. review >>>> 'One of the most accomplished of all travel writers, a foreign correspondent of distinction, a novelist of standing... A delightful set of memoirs and a wonderful read' "Daily Telegraph " >> I Came I Saw (Picador 1994) is an extended issue of 'Jackdaw cake' which is subtitled ‘An Autobiography’, between inverted commas, we might think of the book as ‘unreliable memoirs’. The first two parts of the book, about his childhood, are written in a strain of hyperbole, sometimes as pleasingly Welsh as Dylan or Gwyn Thomas. Before we reach the third section, about his pre-war adventures among Arabs, Cubans and Sicilians, we have been astonished by his weird boyhood in Carmarthen and Enfield, where his experiences seem scarcely less bizarre and exotic. <<< If this isn't enough to whet your appetite it may be time for a Bex & a good lie down.

The Radical Twenties: Writing, Politics, and Culture, Lucas, John
14 Lucas, John The Radical Twenties: Writing, Politics, and Culture
Rutgers Uni Press 1997 Softcover Very Good None issued 21.5cm
-from cover > This book brings together writers from the 1920's who have never before been collectively studied in regard to their political radicalism. Drawing on the works of D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Wolf, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Ivor Gurney, Patrick Hamilton, and others, John Lucas identifies the decade as a time of both political activism and of deliberately transgressive behavior, particularly among women. The book meets head-on the argument of earlier commentators who take for hedonism of the Bright Young Things. Against such elements, Lucas places the work and lifestyles of those who, even if they began by regarding themselves as members of the "lost generation," were determined to find ways out of despair. review >>> "A stimulating and generous-spirited book." -- Times Literary Supplement 263 crisp white pp, less than 500g for post to you.

17 Meyers, Jeffrey Scott Fitzgerald A Biography
London Macmillan 1994 Hardcover Very Good Good 24 Cm
Scott Fitzgerald, a romantic and tragic figure who embodied the decades between the two world wars, was a writer who took his material almost entirely from his life: "My characters are all Scott Fitzgerald. Even the female characters are Scott Fitzgerald." In this much-needed new biography, Jeffrey Meyers offers a perceptive interpretation of both the life and the work of one of America's finest novelists. Despite his early success with The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald's life became a battle against failure and disappointment. Struggling for artistic integrity, he compromised his talent to support his extravagant way of life. His friend and lifelong hero, Ernest Hemingway, was a harsh critic of both his behavior and his novels. reviews >>> This book is a cross between a biography and a history textbook. It takes each chapter and focuses on his life and its comparison with a book he wrote. and >>> This is truly one of the saddest books I have ever read, but I loved it. What a flawed, gifted man. 900g 400pp photo section amidships.

19 Morgan, Susan Place Matters gendered geography in Victorian women's travel books about Southeast Asia
USA Rutgers Uni Press 1996 Papeback Very Good None issued 22cm
Susan Morgan's study of materials and regions previously neglected in contemporary postcolonial studies begins with the transforming premise that "place matters." Concepts derived from writings about one area of the world cannot simply be transposed to another area, in some sort of global theoretical move. Moreover, place in the discourse of Victorian imperialism is a matter of gendered as well as geographic terms. Morgan makes extensive use of theorists whose work on imperialism in Southeast Asia is unfamiliar to most American academics. This vivid examination of a different region and different writings emphasizes that in Victorian literature there was no monolithic imperialist location, authorial or geographic. The very notion of a "colony" or an "imperial presence" in Southeast Asia is problematic. Morgan is concerned with marking the intersections of particular Victorian imperial histories and constructions of subjectivity. She argues that specific places in Southeast Asia have distinctive, and differing, masculine imperial rhetorics. It is within these specific rhetorical contexts that women's writings, including their moments of critique, can be read. 600g + 345 perfect pp

Obstinate Heart: Jane Austen - A Biography, Myer, Valerie Grosvenor
20 Myer, Valerie Grosvenor Obstinate Heart: Jane Austen - A Biography
UK Michael O"Mara Books Limited 1997 Hardcover Excellent Very Good/Good 24 Cm
700g packed to post, 248pp with photos mid section. This biography may best be read in conjunction with its subject's novels, for so much of Jane's life went into her six books, although her heroines generally fared better than their creator. Born the seventh of eight children into the genteel but impoverished home of a clergyman, Jane Austen quickly learned what it meant to be a woman without money--a situation most of her female protagonists shared, yet often overcame through marriage. Austen, however, refused to marry without love, and thus never married. Myer delves into the mores and manners of Austen's times--the importance placed on marriage, respectability, and financial security, all central to theauthor's novels. Most engaging is Myer's exploration of Jane Austen's prickly, imperfect personality, revealed through letters, diaries, and the recollections of her family. In Jane Austen the reader discovers a fully-drawn woman, complete with flaws, strengths, and a burning talent that lives on today, 200 years after her death.
