3 Bialestowski, Alice Paris
France Assouline 1999 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 22cm Damien Lefevre (photos)
79 crisp pp, less than 500g to post. A stroll through Paris is a stroll through time. The City of Light marries architecture, old and new, and captivates as much with its rich, incredibly diverse artistic heritage as with its history. This book provides a chronological presentation of more than thirty of the most noteworthy sites and buildings in Paris -- from the Saint-Germain-des Pres church, boasting one of the oldest Romanesque belltowers in France, to the Pont Neuf, the Eiffel Tower, and the Musee du Louvre. Each building is situated in its historical context, producing a stunning manual of architecture for tourists or Paris lovers alike.

Old London, Bush, Graham
4 Bush, Graham Old London
St Martin's Press 1975 Hardcover Excellent Good/Fair 30cm Dixon, Bool (photog)
Old London is some 174pp & weighs over 500g. I have the book as 'excellent' & the dj as good-fair only because the dj has two short repaired tears. The initail idea came from the imminent demolition of an old building in the late 1800s - the photographers recorded it and with general interest a society was formed with a mission to create records of buildings they thought were in danger of a similar fate.

5 Carter, JR Footplate Cameraman
UK Heathfield Railway Publications 2009 Hardcover Excellent/Very Good No Jacket 30cm
800g & 128 crisp white pp. A personal view of the dying years of steam on Britain's railways full of black & white photos. Jim Carter impressed many with rail & photography inclinations; here's a comment on his passing >>>Like a few of us with photographic - inclinations, he took his opportunities when he could, although not all railwaymen were accomodating. His shot at Diggle on the pair of 2-8-0's always impressed me. He took the trouble to record the 'clearing a path' while he was there. The main road was barely clear through Uppermill but I doubt anyone would have made it to Diggle even on foot. Someone once told me he used a medium format folding camera that was held together with elastic bands. It doesnt suprise me as photography was an expensive game. The thing is, he took classic shots and showed that one didn't need expensive state of the art equipment to do that.....Just an eye for a picture. . . and another >>> When I bumped into Jim Carter in the mid-Eighties, the fear of causing him even the slightest embarrassment deterred me from asking for his autograph. We met on the embankment overlooking Marsden's reverse curves at the Yorkshire end of Standedge Tunnel, a line he regularly worked during his days on the footplate. Mindful of those romantic tales about steam days, I asked him - Did he really fry eggs and bacon on a shovel across the firebox? Jim left me in no doubt about his feelings - "Yon shovel is for feeding t'engine, not your gob!" First out in 1983, this edition 2009. Faults? bump at bottom edge of boards.

15 Lowe, Jacques Remembering JFK: Intimate and Unseen Photographs of the Kennedys
Andre Deutsch 2003 1st Edition Hardcover Excellent Excellent 26.5cm
432 crisp white pp & heading towards 2 kg to post. Jacques Lowe's photographs of the Kennedys, taken during his tenure as JFK's personal photographer, have become the iconic imagery of a time that remains vividly etched in the national psyche. Upon Lowe's death, commentators credited his pictures with creating the myth of camelot. Of Lowe's forty thousand Kennedy photographs, only a few have ever been seen, and all of his negatives, which were housed in a vault in the World Trade Center, were destroyed on September 11, 2001. For this definitive book, fine reproductions have been created from existing prints and contact sheets - in some cases of images he never even printed. Authorised by the Lowe estate, Remebering JFK features more than six hundred pictures, half of which are previously unpublished. Published to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of President Kennedy's death, Remebering JFK includes a tribute by Lowe's closest friend Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Thomasina Lowe chronicles the loss of her father's negatives. Author and journalist Hugh Sidey, a Kennedy expert whose vivd prose deepens our experince of the photographs, has written the introduction and commentary throughout. The book concludes with an appreciation by Tom Wolfe, Lowe's friend and photo subject for forty years. The focus, however, remains on the pictures - a poignant evocation of the charm, youth, high spirits, and legend of the Kennedys, all tinged with a sense of loss. reviewer says >> The book is set out to show Mr Lowe's best photography as well as the ones he rejected, which for me is the real draw of this book, these photographs are in many ways more telling and real - even if not technically perfect. This book is a must for any Kennedy or Lowe enthusiast.
