Alamein, Bungay, Stephen
1 Bungay, Stephen Alamein
UK Aurum Press 2002 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 22.5cm
266 crisp pp, just under the 500g for posting. 2 photo sections - Stephen Bungay’s Alamein is a trenchant re-examination of an event that has been cloaked in myth. For Great Britain, there were two pivotal battles in the Second World War. One was the Battle of Britain. The other was El Alamein. There, in October 1942, in a remote part of the desert between Libya and Egypt, the British army won an epic battle of attrition with Rommel’s Afrika Korps. It was a defeat from which Rommel would never recover and a turning point in the war, famously celebrated by Churchill as “the end of the beginning”—the line in the sand that Hitler’s forces were never able to cross. review >> Clear exposition and good follow-through with post-battle strategic analysis. Bungay isn't afraid to break from the chronological flow of events to better illuminate things.

2 Doherty, Richard The Sound of History: El Alamein 1942
UK Spellmount 2002 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 24 Cm
254 clean pp, photo section, maps, heading towards 700g carded/wrapped for posting. The Eighth Army's victory at El Alamein in November 1942 was one of the pivotal points of the Second World War and significant as the first major victory for a British Army under sole British command. The North African campaign had captured the public imagination in Britain and the victors of Alamein joined those of Agincourt and Waterloo in the ranks of British heroes. This book looks at the background to the battle, the preparations, and the battle itself. Doherty uses personal accounts, war diaries, official regimental and divisional histories, and material from numerous archives to tell the story of this timely British victory.

3 Forty, George Afrika Korps at War, Volume 2 : The Long Road Back
UK Ian Allan 1978 Hardcover Excellent Very Good/Good 30cm
128pp & 750g packed to post. Tautly written and highlighted by many photographs, Lieutenant-Colonel Forty's Afrika Korps at War paints a vivid picture of the German soldiers who fought in North Africa from February 1941 to May 1943. By early 1941 the British were riding the crest of a wave in North Africa and yet two months later the situation was completely reversed following the arrival of General Erwin Rommel and his legendary Deutches Afrika Korps. The book traces the highlights of the Deutches Afrika Korps initial momentous year in the desert during 1941. The story continues from January 1942 and details the history of Rommel's efforts to destroy the Eighth Army, which would have changed the whole course of the war. However, dogged British resistance gradually wore down the DAK and, once the thrust towards Alexandria was halted, the end was in sight for the Afrika Korps.Apart from the exhilarating beginning, this book should tell a tale of defeat and despair but few armies have ever carried out a more dogged, hard fought and orderly withdrawal over such difficult terrain.

11 Quill, Jeffrey Birth of a Legend The Spitfire
UK Quiller Press 1986 2nd Impression Hardcover Good Very Good 25.5cm
ex-lib & some nitwit has removed the 1st page, so low price for this iconoic Quill book. In the pre-war years aerial races were a hit with the famous Schneider Trophy; enter R. J. Mitchell who designed the Supermarine S 4 and anyone with an interest in aircraft design will instantly recognise this as a very early Spitfire with floats instead of wheels. The trophies were won and the development continued right up until the outbreak of World War Two when suddenly the requirements of a nation at war became very different from winning silver cups. Europe had entered into a fight for its own existence and the Supermarine - so far ahead of its time when it first appeared, coupled with a 12 cylinder Merlin engine had become the Spitfire. about the author >>> Jeffrey Quill was the second man to fly the aircraft after Vickers' chief test pilot, "Mutt" Summers, at school constant aerial activity overhead quickened the already air-minded Quill's resolve to take a career in the Royal Air Force, on joining his flying ability was assessed as "exceptional". In September 1932 he joined No 17 Squadron RAF at Upavon, where he began flying Bristol Bulldog fighters, technical development was his forte & right up to 1940 Quill was in charge of development and production flying but gained short release to get combat experience. After the war & by the time he retired to fly a desk Quill had flown more than 50 variants of this magical aircraft. This is Quill's second book & a gem.
