2 David, Elizabeth Harvest of the Cold Months
UK Michael Joseph 1994 Hardcover Very Good Good 24 Cm
At the time of her death in 1992 David was working on this epic study of the use of ice, the ice-trade and the early days of refrigeration, which was published posthumously in 1994 as Harvest of the Cold Months.‘An awe-inspiring feat of detective scholarship, the literally marvellous story of how human beings came to ingest lumps of flavoured frozen matter for pleasure' Independent on Sunday‘This survey of the use of ice in cookery takes us on a fascinating journey from 1581, where in Florence they put snow in the wine glasses, to that modern phenomenon, the growth of the ice-cream business. A scholarly social history, which makes a fitting finale to the work of the greatest of our writers on foods and its contexts.' Harpers & Queen - a water stain (maybe it was ice?? is on the top edge of the dj, otherwise it's a neat 413pp, just under a kilo packed for post.

3 Fraser George MacDonald FLASHMAN ON THE MARCH
London Harper Collins Publishers 2005 1st Edition Hardcover Excellent/Very Good Excellent/very Good Book Weighs Over 500gms 24 Cm Signed by Author
First Edition, 750g packed for posting, 317pp of text, then biblio info, map/illust endpapers. 8vo. original burgundy textured paper boards, gilt titling on spine, vg dustwrapper. The book's plot >>> A reluctant military hero, Flashman plays a key part in most of the defining military campaigns of the 19th century, despite trying his utmost to escape them all. Many have marvelled at General Napier's daring 1868 expedition through the treacherous peaks and bottomless chasms of Abyssinia to rescue a small group of British citizens held captive by the mad tyrant Emperor Theodore. But the vital role of Sir Harry Flashman, V.C., in the success of this campaign has hitherto gone unrecorded. Flashman's undeserved reputation for heroism renders him the British Army's candidate of choice when it comes to skulking behind enemy lines in Ali Baba attire. After all, who but the great amorist could contemplate navigating a land populated by hostile tribes and the loveliest (and most savage) women in Africa, from leather-clad nymphs with a penchant for torture to a voluptuous barbarian queen with a reputation for throwing disobliging guests to her pet lions? 5 Fraser, George MacDonald Flashman and the Dragon
London Collins Harvill 1985 1st Edition Hardcover Excellent Excellent 22.5cm
Book is 320 crisp pp, just under 500g to post. Flashman and the Dragon is a 1985 novel by George MacDonald Fraser. It is the eighth of the Flashman novels. Presented within the frame of the supposedly discovered historical Flashman Papers, this book describes the bully Flashman from Tom Brown's School Days. The papers are attributed to Flashman, who is not only the bully featured in Thomas Hughes' novel, but also a well-known Victorian military hero. The book begins with an explanatory note detailing the discovery of these papers. The present novel takes place shortly after Flashman's service with John Brown in the United States (detailed in Flashman and the Angel of the Lord). There is no explanation as to how he ends up in Hong Kong, but it is from here that he begins his adventures in China. Flashman meets both the leaders of the Taiping Rebellion and members of the Qing Dynasty who resisted the British march to Peking in 1860 - part of the Second Opium War. The Infidel, Shepherd, Bob
12 Shepherd, Bob The Infidel
Simon & Schuster 2010 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 24 Cm
373 thrilling pp & 700g to post. When Islamic militants infiltrate an elite British counter-narcotics programme, disaster is averted thanks to SAS veterans John Patterson and Dusty Miller. But when fallout from the affair threatens to topple the West's fragile Afghan alliance and expose failings inside the UK's new crime fighting agency, John and Dusty suddenly find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Alone and on the run, one place on earth holds the key to their innocence: Nuristan, a remote Afghan province and notorious terrorist haven. But their journey to freedom will thrust them deeper into the Afghan conflict than they ever imagined. Battling hostile terrain and Islamic fighters, John and Dusty emerge the unlikely champions of an ancient community torn apart by al-Qaeda and western forces. From Bob Shepherd, ex-SAS soldier and bestselling author of The Circuit, comes an adventure inspired by Rudyard Kipling's The Man Who Would Be King. An action-packed tale of honour, betrayal and tribalism, The Infidel is thrilling, poignant and deeply relevant to one of the bloodiest conflicts of our time.
