2 Bartlett, Norman Island Victory
Australia Angus & Robertson 1955 1st Hardcover Good Fair 20.5cm
166pp & less than 500g to post. Name removed top right corner 1st p. Bartlett was somewhat snobbish about authors who wrote luridly illustrated paperbacks, a case of judging a book by its cover. Anyway here is his novelisation of war in the Pacific, Island Victory > "The events in this book all happened. It is only fiction in so far as events have been rearranged into a coherent pattern." The action is set in 1944 in New Guinea and on Kamiri island - a Dutch possession to the north. An Australian Kittyhawk squadron recaptures Kamiri with US support. The action is mostly in the personalities and thoughts of the characters. There's some interesting absence of regard for the indigenous peoples swept up into this conflict.

UK Atlantic Books, London 2007 Hardcover Excellent/Very Good Very Good 22.5cm
Have a listen on you tube & then enjoy reading this biographical gem. Havana, 1932, and greengrocer Matias Castro, father of 13 children, is bankrupt. Cuchito, his eldest daughter, has the idea of starting an all-girl orchestra to bring in some cash. Jazz, mambo, rumba, cha-cha-cha, Latin jazz - 'Anacaona' perform every evening in local street cafes. In no time at all they conquer their audiences' hearts with their infectious music and cheeky lyrics. Alicia Castro, the author of this extraordinary memoir, played saxophone and later led the orchestra. The Pacific Campaign The Second World War at Sea, Dan Van Der Vat
5 Dan Van Der Vat The Pacific Campaign The Second World War at Sea
Hodder & Stoughton 1992 Hardcover Very Good Very Good/Good 24 Cm
430pp, 900g to post, photo section amidships. Dan van der Vat's naval histories have been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic as "definitive," "extraordinary," and "vivid and harrowing." Now he turns to the greatest naval conflict in history: the Pacific campaign of World War II. Drawing on neglected archives of firsthand accounts from both sides, van der Vat interweaves eyewitness testimony with sharp, analytical narration to provide a penetrating reappraisal of the strategic and political background of both the Japanese and American forces, as well as a major reassessment of the role of intelligence on both sides. A comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the war in the Pacific, The Pacific Campaign promises to be the standard work on the U.S.-Japanese war for years to come. review says>>> Even better than his other book, "the Atlantic Campaign". It was a bigger war for the US Navy and it covered a lot of geography. Lots of interviews with Japanese and British soldiers and sailors for balance.

Japan attacked British-ruled Malaya on 8 December 1941 as part of a wave of military actions that toppled the British, Dutch and American colonial regimes in Southeast Asia. Within seventy days, the conquest of Malaya was complete, the three and a half years of Japanese rule are generally considered to mark a profound transition in the history of the Malay peninsula, but little is known about this period. Abacus 2006 Hardcover Very Good Very Good
In this important book, Brian MacArthur draws on the diaries of American, British, Dutch, and Australian Fepows (Far Eastern prisoners of war), some of whose recollections are published here for the first time. These soldiers wrote and kept their diaries, in secret, because they were determined that to record for posterity how they were starved and beaten, marched almost to death, or transported on "hellships"; how their fellows were summarily executed by guards or felled by the thousands by tropical diseases; and how they were used as slave labor- most notoriously on the Burma-Thailand railway, as depicted in The Bridge on the River Kwai. 494 pp, 2 photo sections, 450g for post.

12 Stewart, John To the River Kwai Two Journeys 1943, 1979
UK Bloomsbury 1988 Hardcover Very Good Very Good 24 Cm
This book exemplifies the debt we owe to our dads & grandads. In this memoir, John Stewart explores the truth and myth of "The Bridge on the River Kwai".;Taken prisoner in Singapore in 1942, John Stewart learned Japanese and became an interpreter. He was one of the few survivors (just over one in ten) of the Sonkurai camp on the Burma-Siam railway. While a Japanese prisoner he kept a diary. His notes serve as a background to this account and as a source of meditation on his Japanese captors. What to think of a Japanese Colonel who cried when a British officer accused him of bad faith? Or a Camp Commandant who, on the point of beheading a couple of prisoners (the author being one of them), changed his mind and invited them to share his sake?;Over 40 years later, the author returned to the Kwai, going beyond Sonkurai and into Burma with the guerrillas, ostensibly to see if the report of a steel bridge still standing in the jungle was true but also to reflect on his past experiences. 175 crisp pp, photo section amidships. about 650 g carded/bubbled for post
