Elizabeth Butler Battle Artist, Butler, Elizabeth
2 Butler, Elizabeth Elizabeth Butler Battle Artist
UK Fisher Press 1993 Paperback Very Good/good None Issued 19.5cm
Both Elizabeth's parents were interested in art and at an early age she was encouraged to paint and draw. At first Elizabeth concentrated on painting portraits and landscapes but after visiting France, where she saw paintings inspired by the Franco-Prussian War, she began to paint military subjects. In 1874 submitted a painting entitled the Roll Call to the Royal Academy in London - it was so popular it was taken on tour. In later conflicts Britons sought more encouraging visions & her fame diminished. "I never painted for the glory of war, but to portray its pathos and heroism."- EB quote. 281pp, less than 500g for post. Fascinating autobiography for military, art, feminist interest. Faults? vertical crease to cover visible in reflected light.

3 Carver, Field Marshal Lord The National Army Museum Book of the Boer War
UK Pan Books 2000 Paperback Very Good Very Good 19cm
299pp with 3 photo sections, less than 500g to post. Published in co-operation with the famous National Army Museum, this quotes extensively from the Museum's unpublished archive of diaries, letters and documents. The text is complemented by unpublished photos from the Museum's collections. reviewer says >>> What makes Lord Carver's book so worthwhile is that he had access to soldiers' letters written at the time of the conflict. They give a vivid, fresh picture of the major events, and communicate the prevailing attitudes. A really interesting decision was to leave the letters as they were written, with grammatical mistakes, poor spelling and mistaken places names intact, although they have been re-set in type. The overall effect generates wonderful atmosphere; something which is often missing from learned studies of this period.

To the Bitter End: Photographic History of the Boer War, 1899-1902, Lee, Emanoel
5 Lee, Emanoel To the Bitter End: Photographic History of the Boer War, 1899-1902
UK Penguin 1986 Softcover Very Good/Good None issued 24.5cm
226pp with multiple photos/maps throughout, 750g packed for posting, slight corner bump/crease. Hostilities between Britain and the Boer republics broke out just two years after the invention of the Folding Pocket Kodak, the first camera to use "cartridge film" and that could be afforded by ordinary men, such as troops serving in foreign territories. Emmanoel Lee's interest in South Africa's history and his passion for photography are combined in this valuable pictorial history of the Boer War, which is the result of twenty years' research in Britain, South Africa, Holland and the USA. To the Bitter End emphasizes particular aspects of the Boer War - the foreign volunteers, the concentration camps, the hospital treatment and the eighteen months of fighting that went on after the war had officially ended - and matches photographic images with historical documents to give a clear and evocative picture of the war. Reviewer says >>> This book has photos and information not found in anything else i've read.
