Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Clark, Brian
2 Clark, Brian Whose Life Is It Anyway?
UK Heimeman 1993 Laminated Pictorial Boards Excellent None issued 20.5cm
gr review - WLIA is a classic play, all about the conflict between professionalism and the right to decide for one's self. Ken Harrison is paralyzed for life, with no hope of physical recovery. In an attempt to keep what's left of his dignity, and protect his loved ones from a fate of misery, imprisoned by sympathy for him, he decides to end his life. Everyone around him in the hospital tries their best to stop him, but for the intelligent person he is, they can't stand a chance in an argument. All in all, as heart-wrenching and morally confusing this play could be to a reader or a viewer, it is deeply touching, well-written and definitely worthy of being a classic taught worldwide. Clean & well bound little volume.

3 Dengate, Sue Different Kids Growing Up with Attention Deficit Disorder
Australia Random House 1994 Paperback Very Good None issued 22cm
264 crisp white pages of invaluable advice & info, Millions of children, some as young as two years old, now take stimulant drugs such as Ritalin to control their behaviour. But there is another way. Through an exciting, can't-put-it-down story, Different Kids presents an effective alternative to medication for managing children's behaviour. Author Sue Dengate is a former school teacher and behaviour management instructor couldn't manage her own children's behaviour. After years of trial and error, she discovered that new Australian research about food intolerance provided the best treatment for her children's attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiance and learning difficulties. A best-seller in Australia and now available in the USA, it introduces a form of dietary management based on new Australian research, which is so far unknown in the U.S.

Is it Just Me?, Hart, Miranda
4 Hart, Miranda Is it Just Me?
Hodder & Stoughton 2012 Softcover Very Good None issued 23 Cm
323 pp & just over the 500g to post (add a title or 2 & use up your post allowance). Does everybody struggle with the hazards that accompany, say, sitting elegantly on a bar stool; using chopsticks; pretending to understand the bank crisis; pedicures - surely it's plain wrong for a stranger to fondle your feet? Or is it just me? I am proud to say I have a wealth of awkward experiences - from school days to life as an office temp - and here I offer my 18-year-old self (and I hope you too dear reader) some much needed caution and guidance on how to navigate life's rocky path. reviewer says >> In her brilliantly funny book, TV's Miranda muses on some of the most challenging, baffling and 'hideola' aspects of life... all the anecdotes are told in her unique style, with regular interjections from her 18-year-old self. Such fun! Faults? (with book, not Miranda) bumped corners.

5 Holden, Wendy Shell Shock The Psychological Impact of War
UK Channel 4 Books 1998 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 24 Cm
In this book individual soldiers tell their own stories of horrors to which they have been exposed, and of events that pushed them to the brink of human endurance. The terrible physical effects of sending men into battle have always been self-evident, but only in modern times have the psychological effects been examined. Killing, watching friends die, leading soldiers to their deaths - all have a profound effect on those involved in the front line of war. The author also relates the history of military psychiatry and the scientists who have to balance the demands of the army to "cure" soldiers and return them to battle with the demands of the soldiers themselves, struggling to understand their condition. review >>> A fantastic insightful book, packed with facts regarding war & its effects on the human condition and the development of psychology and psychiatry.

A Nietzsche Reader, Hollingdale, RJ (& Nietzsche)
6 Hollingdale, RJ (& Nietzsche) A Nietzsche Reader
Penguin 1977 Paperback Good None issued 17.5cm
Less than 500g, 286pp The literary career of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) spanned less than twenty years, but no area of intellectual inquiry was left untouched by his iconoclastic genius. The philosopher who announced the death of God in The Gay Science (1882) and went on to challenge the Christian code of morality in Beyond Good and Evil (1886), grappled with the fundamental issues of the human condition in his own intense autobiography, Ecce Homo (1888). Most notorious of all, perhaps, his idea of the triumphantly transgressive übermann ('superman') is developed in the extreme, yet poetic words of Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883-92). Whether addressing conventional Western philosophy or breaking new ground, Nietzsche vastly extended the boundaries of nineteenth-century thought. review says >>> Nietzsche yells out that God is dead and he’s glad for that. Christianity shuts us down, tells us we are bad and tells us how to be good. Christianity is his primary target, but he’s also against our tribal life that creates conformity (the herd mentality). Philosophers are prime targets as well. Plato, Kant and others insist on a universality that buries the individual. The will-to-power is about the will-to-live, to seek what we need and to defend against what we don’t need. Collectively, life is “appropriation” and “self-preservation.” There is nothing wrong with animal instincts he says, but there is everything wrong with religious, social, and ethical rules that tell us that we are bad beings. Faults? crease on cover, maybe it was the prev owner's repression being expressed. . ??

10 Morgan, Susan Place Matters gendered geography in Victorian women's travel books about Southeast Asia
USA Rutgers Uni Press 1996 Papeback Very Good None issued 22cm
Susan Morgan's study of materials and regions previously neglected in contemporary postcolonial studies begins with the transforming premise that "place matters." Concepts derived from writings about one area of the world cannot simply be transposed to another area, in some sort of global theoretical move. Moreover, place in the discourse of Victorian imperialism is a matter of gendered as well as geographic terms. Morgan makes extensive use of theorists whose work on imperialism in Southeast Asia is unfamiliar to most American academics. This vivid examination of a different region and different writings emphasizes that in Victorian literature there was no monolithic imperialist location, authorial or geographic. The very notion of a "colony" or an "imperial presence" in Southeast Asia is problematic. Morgan is concerned with marking the intersections of particular Victorian imperial histories and constructions of subjectivity. She argues that specific places in Southeast Asia have distinctive, and differing, masculine imperial rhetorics. It is within these specific rhetorical contexts that women's writings, including their moments of critique, can be read. 600g + 345 perfect pp

The Hitler Emigres: The Cultural Impact on Britain of Refugees from Nazism, Snowman, Daniel
12 Snowman, Daniel The Hitler Emigres: The Cultural Impact on Britain of Refugees from Nazism
UK Chatto & Windus 2002 Hardcover Excellent Very Good 24 Cm
The Hitler Emigres (466 crisp pp, 800g for post) investigates how Nazism changed Britain's social structure. Emigrés from Nazi Europe still inhabit London's Swiss Cottage; in this refugee heartland, they are known as the beret and borscht brigade. As well as an informative and painstaking history, The Hitler Emigrés shows British history is no longer an island saga of warring Saxon tribes and Romans. This modern nation was formed, in part, by a persecuted minority from abroad. The book features colourful portraits of some of Britain's most celebrated artists, architects, musicians, choreographers, film makers, historians, philosophers, scientists, writers, broadcasters and publishers - all skilfully woven into the wider context of British cultural history from the 1930s to the present.
