"This is a new, much-enlarged edition of a book which first appeared in paperback form in 1964. This is a book for both transport enthusiasts and industrial archaeologists. The Haytor Granite Tramway had two main distinctions, It was Devon's first railway, opened as early as 1820 and it was built on granite, the building material it maintly carried. The railway runs through some of South Devon's finest scenery. At Teigngrace the railway connected with the older Stover Canal. There was also a Hackney Canal and the traffic of both canals went down the Teign navigation to Teignmouth where large quantities of potters' clay were once poled from barges on to sea-going vessels."
